Rail Transload/storage – Weyburn’s access to the CP rail line, its proximity to the US market and the availability of affordable land makes this community a desirable location for a rail transload and storage facility. A transload facility located in southeastern Saskatchewan would provide a strategic alternative for a new north-south gateway access to connect, create, and enable markets for Saskatchewan’s significant resource sectors. Rail transportation is one of the safest, economical and most reliable modes of transport of goods in Canada. With a growing need to find alternative methods of transport other than a highway, rail is an opportunity that many industries are exploring.
Current shortages of rail car storage also pose an opportunity in conjunction with transload facilities. Rail car storage is currently a lucrative business opportunity that can yield consistent revenue.
Operating a sage and productive railway requires that employees are skilled. Locomotive training facilities are also in short supply in Canada. Our community is home to the Southeast College who would be eager to create the capacity to coordinate onsite training in locomotive operation which would complement an existing transload facility.
